True toĀ the Montessori philosophy of a Cosmic Education; Art, Music, P.E., Spanish, Performing Arts, as well as other child-driven interests are woven into all of the experiences a student has at Butler Montessori.

Art

Exposure to and appreciation for art begins when children start their Montessori journey and continues throughout their educational years. At Butler Montessori, formal art classes are offered once a week from grades 4 through 11, focusing on a diverse range of projects, techniques, mediums, and styles.

Art is integrated into various aspects of the student's work and experiences, from decorating math papers with addition problems to identifying different art styles and creating backdrops for school plays. Art remains a constant and enriching presence in the lives of Butler Montessori students.

Physical Education

Games and activities work on physical development, especially fine and gross motor skills, and building or increasing physical stamina.

The importance of physical exercise and the need for children to have the freedom to ā€œmoveā€ permeates life at Butler Montessori and its community. The 22-acre campus, with fields, woods, gardens and trails, provides a beautiful environment and a strong call to be outside doing activities whenever possible. Students beginning at Lower Elementary, practice teamwork and good sportsmanship while learning basic ball and team skills.

Music & Performing Arts

Consistent with Dr. Maria Montessoriā€™s teaching philosophy, Butler Montessoriā€™s music curriculum is age-appropriate and organized to meet the different developmental stages of the childā€™s growth. Music is introduced inside of every classroom from the Nido Environment all the way to the High School.

Through dramatic exploration at every level, from Elementary showcases to scenes from Shakespeare, students are given the opportunity to channel their emotions, thoughts, and ideas.

Spanish

As with all things taught at Butler Montessori Spanish is integrated into many facets of our students' education.

Lower Elementary students begin with basic word recognition matching them with object cards, similar to the Primary students when learning to read. As they progress Spanish is taken further in the Elementary classrooms to identify trees and animals and into cooking classes and book reports. By the time the students get to the Intermediate program they are comfortable carrying on conversations and writing reports in Spanish.

Environmental Education

Our 22-acre campus is designed to take learning outside the classroom.Ā

Butler Montessoriā€™s ā€˜Green Schoolā€™ mission is a large part of the Montessori pedagogy andĀ is manifested in innumerable ways at Butler Montessori.

Our goal isĀ to empower students by creating a fascination for nature by way of hands-on, nature-based inquiry.
